The aim of the ArtTextiles (1, 2 & 3) exhibitions at Bury St. Edmunds, UK was to create a democratic and open basis for textile artists to submit work to a national exhibition intended to provide a survey of current practice with a view to stimulating debate.
“ArtTextiles demonstrates a spirit of confidence and discernment –the selection that distills an exhibition of 52 works from a submission of nearly 500 produces a very strong brew,” wrote Linda Theophilius of the first exhibition. “This first exhibition has attracted ‘new names’ – either recent graduates, or those coming to textiles from other disciplines, or those who only now feel encouraged to show work to a wider public; senior artists to have taken the opportunity to submit work that marks new phases and approaches.”
